Where It Started
HunterSmith was founded by owner Paul Smith with the help of good friend, previous work colleague and design engineer Pieter Loubser. Paul built and ran a successful Truck and Ute deck and body building business in New Zealand. After selling that business and returning home to South Africa in 2021, Paul saw a clear gap in the South African market and that’s where HunterSmith started.
In Australia, New Zealand and many other countries, bakkie tray and canopy systems are a massive, well-established industry. Tradesmen, farmers and commercial fleets rely on purpose- built tray systems, canopies and toolbox configurations to get the job done. In South Africa, that market barely exists.
HunterSmith is changing that. We’re building South Africa’s purpose-built, fully modular work bakkie tray and canopy system — designed from the ground up for the demands of local trades, local farmers and local business.
